Top 15 of my bookish 2021 – The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series + Book Recs from You?!

Hey there my lovelies!

2021 is over and 2022 will hopefully turn out to be better than the last year! I really hope your 2022 started well and that you’re having a good time already. =) This said I want to begin the new year with a look at the old one. So since this became some sort of blog tradition I decided that I’d write another one of my „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“ blog posts! My initial goal for this year was to read 45 books and even though I managed to hit that number in October I still had a very though time to finish my challenge because I was in the worst reading slump ever. It started in August and stuck with me until December. (If you compare the number of books I read from January – June: 32 with the books I read from July – December: 25 you can see how bad it actually was.) I know 7 books doesn’t look like much but considering I usually read 4 – 5 books a month this was 1,5 months worth of reading for me. XD

Anyway! I’m out of my slump now and I hope it stays that way! *lol* Let’s do this and go for the traditional summary of my reading year 2021! Read about „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“! 😛

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

The Awesome:

– Felix Ever After

55811021. sy475

This book had me curious for ages and everyone who read it was raving about it so of course I couldn’t resist to read it as well. Especially not when I found it sitting on the shelf of my library. I mean alone the cover!! And let me tell you: It was really as good as everyone claimed it would be! I loved to read „Felix Ever After“ and it’s one of those books that truly stayed with me because it made me think about a lot of things. For instance about how others perceive me, how I see myself, how I want to be seen. I just loved that about it! A great book and a thought-provoking one at that. XD

If This Gets Out

56347574. sy475

I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this and I’m so happy I was allowed to dive into „If This Gets Out“! This book had everything I love in my books: A LGBTQ+ rep, music, band life, the best-friends-to-lovers trope with a dash of forbidden love, found family and to top it all off even a tour/road trip element. *lol* Yes, I’m gonna be honest here: Ruben and Zach were so frustrating sometimes but we love to suffer, right? XD

House of Earth and Blood:

46045411. sy475

This book was a masterpiece and I mean it! I always loved Sarah J. Maas’s books and I’m a huge fan of her, but with this one… well she knocked it out of the park! ❤ I LOVED this book so much and even though it took me quite a while to get into the story because there were so many details I needed to know in order to move on, I ultimately ended up adoring this book. I have no idea how Sarah wants to top this because this was only book one in a series, but whatever she’ll come up with next: I’m game! 😉

The Raven King:

18743272

Okay, I gotta be honest here: My heart is still a bleeding and raw mess after reading „The Raven King“. This book was… I have no words. It killed me… What Andrew and Neil go through in this second installment is not… I just want to hug my babies and hide them from the cruel world they live in. GAH!! I have no idea how I’m going to survive the last book but I’m so going to read it because I want to know what happens with my Foxes. *mental breakdown*

 I Was Born for This

36536433. sy475

I love Alice Oseman’s books and I love books that have to do with bands, fandoms and music so this was basically everything I ever wanted. Not to mention that it also had LGBTQ+ reps because we’re talking about an Alice Oseman book here. 😉 In short: I was a happy camper and I gobbled this up like nobody’s business. *lol* So good and definitely one of my favourite Oseman books. 😀

The Meagre:

Darkdawn:

52783987. sy475

Sooo…. while I gave this book four paws in total and still enjoyed it somehow it definitely was my least favourite book of the series. We had a specific theme in „Nevernight“, we had a theme in „Godsgrave“ but „Darkdawn“!? Well, if you ask me it was all over the place and the ending was kind of anticlimactic. At least for me it was. Plus even though I’m a LGBTQ+ shipper all the way, I just couldn’t ship THAT ship. I love Mia but I didn’t love… her love interest and my Yoongi and I were constantly rolling our eyes. Nope, that didn’t work for me… at all. We’re probably in the minority here but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

– Elusion by Zoe Parker:

36112864. sy475

I gave this book three paws and it definitely was one of the weirdest books I ever read. I mean at first we have darkness, abuse, torture and hopelessness, lather, rinse, repeat. Over and over again I might add and then all of a sudden at around half of the book everything changed so drastically that it felt like I was reading an entirely different book. And I just couldn’t with that… so yeah.

– The Heir by Kiera Cass:

24965992

Heaven save me from spoiled brats that are supposed to inherit a throne! *lol* No, seriously! I just couldn’t stand Eadlyn… at all. She was such an dislikable character and to say it with one of my bestie’s words: „Eadlyn is everything America was not.“ And we mean that in a bad way. 😉 The boys in the book were nice (okay, most of them were) but Eadlyn. Nope. Also the fact that she made a 180 degree character turn in the second installment was so unbelievable that I got a rash from fanserviceritis. Conclusion: Definitely not for me.

– Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard:

53332023. sy475

This book was okay and I think that’s exactly my problem. About half of the stories in here I didn’t need to read because I already read the short stories when they came out with the books and the other half of new stories wasn’t really doing it for me. „World Behind“ and „Fire Light“ were the two short stories I liked the most, but the rest of the book wasn’t all too engaging. Also: You would have thought that Victoria would finally give us some background stoy on Maven and Thomas or even somthing about Maven’s youth, but she didn’t and I’m… disappointed.

– Superman:

36531590. sy475

I mean this wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t amazing either. I read all the previous DC Icons books and I’ve to say that this was the weakest in the entire series so far. Maybe it’s because Superman is too perfect and good? *lol* I like my superheroes with eges. XD

The Series:

– The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan:

  18694012

I just love Uncle Rick’s books! ❤ He writes the best adventure stories ever and „The Mark of Athena“ was no exception to the rule. I actually wanted to finish „The Heroes of Olympus“ series in 2021 but then my reading slump hit and I saved it for 2022. There are only two books left so I’m sure I will be able to finish it this year. I guess after that „The Kane Chronicles“ will be up next. =)

– The Folk of the Air by Holly Black:

  43393863. sy475      26032912. sy475

I absolutely loved „The Cruel Prince“ and „The Wicked King“. Those two books were amazing and for someone like me who loves faeries and court intrigues this was perfect. Also Cardan and Jude! I mean honestly, do I have to say more about that love-hate relationship? *lol* As for „The Queen of Nothing“ it was good but not as good as the former books. The ending was kinda weird as well but also somehow fitting for „faerie tales“?!

– Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel:

33950895. sy475

Now this series came as a total surprise! I didn’t expect to like it so much and everyone who saw my TBR video about it knows that I was very skeptical about the „mysterious giant hand“. *lol* I stand corrected though because this was great! Truth be told, I don’t understand why not more people rave about this! I mean if you loved „Illuminae“ I’m sure you’ll love this one as well.

– The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer:

18139931. sy475      21469054. sy475

I actually managed to continue with this series in 2021 and read „Scarlet“ and „Cress“! Of course I loved them both and I have such a soft spot for Cress. She’s really amazing and I just want to cuddle and hug her. Same goes for Kai! Love that man to bits and pieces! ❤ Still, the ending of „Cress“ had me so worried about all those beloved characters and I hope they will be fine when I read „Winter“ this year. I’m planning to finish the series in 2022 so you can watch out for my review of the last book. 😉

Railhead by Philip Reeve:

31119095. sy475

This series is very beloved by the Yoongi to my V and I got very curious about it. Needless to say I grabbed it off the shelf as soon as I saw it at my library. *lol* And of course I loved it when I read it because my Yoongi has impeccable taste when it comes to books! ❤ We also share brain cells so that might be another reason why I knew that I’d enjoy it. XD Anyway! This was great! I loved the idea of sentient locos, space travel through wormholes and of motoriks. I’ll definitely make sure to pick up book two soon.

Rankenzeile

So this was my year 2021 in 15 books! How was your 2021? Was it a good reading year for you? Did you manage to read all the books you wanted to read? Or did you fall into a huge reading slump as well? Are there some books you didn’t manage to read in 2021 and took into 2022?  Let me know in the comments! 😉

And because this has become a tradition too: Just like in the years before I want to give you a chance to throw in some of your book recommendations for My Book List 2022! My goal is to read 45 books in 2022 and the last 5 spots are up to you! Just write me your book recs in the comments and I’ll throw them in a bowl and pull out 5 of them! 😉 (I guess this year I’ll even make a video about it. I mean what is my BookTube for?! XD)

This said I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and I hope that your 2021 will be amazing and way better than 2021 was! ❤ I mean it gotta be better, right?! Right? *lol* And because it’s so important these days: Aside from happines, success, contentment, luck and lots of love I also wish you good health!

Please take care an stay healthy and safe!

*hugs’n’kisses*

Top 15 of my bookish 2020 – The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series + Book Recs from you?!

Hey there my lovelies!

2020 is finally coming to an end and since this became some sort of blog tradition I decided that I’d write another one of my „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“ blog posts! My initial goal for this year was to read 42 books, but in the end I upped my challenge once and decided to go for 52 books. For the first time ever since I joined GR I only raised it that one time and then let it be, though. Which turned out to be one of the best decisions ever. Without any pressure I actually made it to 91 books in total and it felt really good not to have a deadline.

This said here’s a short summary of my reading year 2020! Read about „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“! 😛

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

The Awesome:

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle:

43242080

I heard so many great things about „The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle“ and the plot sounded super intriguing so I just had to go for it. I love murder mysteries and even though I’m quite the wannabe Sherlock this book managed to give me a run for my money. *lol* I swear this was a tough nut to crack but I had so much fun trying to solve the puzzle that I didn’t mind the headache! XD Legit one of the best books I read this year! 😉

– Sadie:

34810320. sy475

This book will haunt me until I die. I rarely read anything that killed me as much as „Sadie“ did and I genuinely hope no other book will succeed to throw me as much as this one did. I finished it months ago but I still think about it. The dark and gloomy atmosphere, the eerie vibe, the haunting subject matter. This book was intense. Even more so because I listened to the accompanying podcast and to say it made the experience feel even more real would probably be the understatement of the century. Highly recommended even though it might haunt you too. >_< If you want to read my full review you can do it here!

– Radio Silence:

41827561. sy475

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this! „Radio Silence“ was the best thing ever and I loved this book to bits and pieces! The strong friendship between Frances and Aled was amazing and even though Alice Oseman tackled quite some serious topics with this book she did it in a really good way. I still think this is the voice of a generation and I’m determined to read every single one of Oseman’s books now. *lol*

– Beartown:

33413128. sy475

This story broke my heart, broke it some more and then kind of glued it together again. In short this was a rollercoaster of emotions and Fredrik Backman sort of put me through the wringer. XD I rarely read books that captured humanity so well and I can recommend „Beartown“ to everyone who loves character driven books with serious topics that cause you to think about them even after you finished the book.

The Impossible Boy:

33536168

„The Impossible Boy“ was everything I needed and so, so much more! ❤ I love it so much and I’m so glad that I finally found a gender fluid rep that almost nailed it. Well, at least about 50% because Stan’s birth gender is male. 😉 The characters were just really relatable and felt real and I’m definitely going to read the second book in 2021. I hope it will be as good as the first one!

The Meagre:

– Imagine Me:

52518647. sx318 sy475

I know to see this in „The Meagre“ must be a shock because I’m such a huge fan of this series but this book was a disaster! I loved the original trilogy and I even enjoyed book 4 and 5. This last and final book was all over the place and horrible though! And this is me saying it as a huge fan. I really expected and wanted more from this so it only got 2,5 paws which is a shame but it is the way it is. If you want to read my entire rant you can do it here!

The Death Cure:

13265138

I rarely read a book that made as little sense as this one and I’m convinced this is one of the rare cases where the accompanying movie series made more sense than the books. *lol*  From book two on this was so not what I expected and by the end of book 3 I collected so many question marks that I could have built a house with them. So nope, this one didn’t do it for me and the only good thing about is was Newt.

Wild Things:

18373098

I really enjoy this series and I love to read the books when I need something easy and quick. You might say „The Chicagoland Vampires“ is my bookish equivalent to fast food and that would be totally accurate. *lol* Still, this was book 9 and some of the themes are getting repetitive. If Chloe Neill doesn’t resolve some of the problems that have been going on for ages it will get boring pretty soon. >_<

– A Court of Frost and Starlight:

36048256. sy475

I was so angry after reading this. XD I mean it definitely had some good parts but Sarah actually managed to make me dislike Rhys and Feyre and that’s not what I want after I shipped them for 3 books. For me their story is told and it’s time to read something new. I wasn’t okay with a lot of the things that happened in here and my review about ACOFAS kind of turned into a rant. If you want to know why I disliked this novella you can read my full review here!

– Still Me:

36048240. sy475

I loved „Me Before You“ and I adored „After You“, this said it makes me really sad to say that I wasn’t happy with „Still Me“. Or rather I had some very mixed feelings about it and I can neither say that I enjoyed it nor can I say that I didn’t. *lol* This read as fast as the other two books but there were way too many things/issues that didn’t get resolved, let alone addressed. Maybe my expectations for final books are too high but after reading three or six or however many books of a series I just want closure and no new questions. XD Might be a me thing. Idk. *shrugs* All I know is that I didn’t get it after this one and I feel conflicted. >_<

The Series:

– The Venery Series by Suanne Lacqueur :

32504400. sy475    36285077. sx318

I can’t believe I never heard of this series up until „An Exaltation of Larks“ appeared on my NetGalley feed. Back then I was like: „Oh sounds interesting, I want to read it.“ And now after reading not only the first book but also „A Charm of Finches“ I’m in LOVE. I’m addicted, obsessed, I just want more! No one writes human nature as good as Suanne does and she’s so thoughtful with the details that it actually hurts sometimes. In a good way! In a very good way! Suanne is a wonderful author and person (Yes, we became friends after I gushed about her book. *lol*) and she gives her stories a 200%! If you don’t know her books yet: Read them! You won’t be disappointed! ❤

– Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman:

37378443     33555224. sy475       43822024

If „Illuminae“ was THE series I binged in 2019 then „Arc of a Scythe“ was THE series I binged in 2020. XD I loved this dystopian sci-fi series so damn much and I suffered, hoped and fought alongside the characters. Neal Shusterman tortured me with his plot twists and to read this was actually a pretty stressful experience. *lol* I loved all of those three books and even though they were all different they were amazing and the character cast was awesome! If you want to read my full reviews you can do it here: ScytheThunderhead and The Toll!

– The Legend series by Marie Lu:

13042002     13414446

I’ve heard so much about this series and then I found it at my library and decided that I needed to read it! XD And tell you what? I didn’t regret it! ;-P I loved every Marie Lu book so far and those two were no exception to the rule. June and Day are two amazing protagonists and they made my day(s)! (pun intended *lol*) Day is my precious boy and I’ll protect him with my life! ❤ And June. Well, she can take care of herself but I’d still give her a hug. XD I really need to read „Champion“ but since we’re in our third lockdown this year my library is closed. >_< Guess I’ll have to wait until the middle of January before I’ll be able to borrow the finale. Read both of my reviews here: LegendProdigy

– The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare:

8700058. sy475    10025305

I always say that I’m a snail and I guess I proved it when I reread the first two books of „The Infernal Devices“ this year. *lol* It took me 5 months to read „Clockwork Angel“ and it took me another 3 months to finish „Clockwork Prince“! I just read them very slowly because I wanted to savour my reread as much as possible and I’m really glad I didn’t rush through this series this time around. 😀 There were so many things I could appreciate and I can’t wait to read about Tessa, Will & Jem in the last and final book! ❤ „Clockwork Princess“ is already on my list for 2021 and I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. 😉

– The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff:

34503674. sy475       36481352. sy475

I think we can all agree that Jay Kristoff wants to either kill or torture us with his books because WOW those two definitely had it in them. O_o Both of them went in an entirely different direction but boy, were they great! All those plot twists left me reeling and I can’t wait to read „Darkdawn“ in 2021. I’m so glad Sabrina @ Notes From A Paper Plane Nomad buddy read „Godsgrave“ with me because I probably would have died without her support! *lol* Plus our WhatsApp chats with lots of BTS gifs were hilarious! Seriously, I had so much fun! So THANK YOU, Sabrina! I can’t wait to read „Darkdawn“ with you! ❤

Top 15 of my bookish 2019 – The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series

Hey there my lovelies!

The old year is coming to an end (pretty soon I might add) and since this worked out so nicely last year I thought I might give you another round of „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“! Considering that my reading goal was pretty low this year and that I only set it on 40 books, I was surprised to realize that it ended up being 80. (YES, I actually made it to 80!!! XD) And just like last year I thought that I read no horrible books until I took a closer look at my list and noticed that there were actually a few that got a pretty low rating from me. *lol*

Anyway here’s a short summary of my reading year 2019! Read about „The Awesome, The Meagre & The Series“! 😛

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

The Awesome:

– Red, White & Royal Blue:

41150487__SY475_

This book was pure fluff and definitely the biggest surprise of this year! (Well, at least for me it was! XD) So many people wrote great reviews about it and this only caused me to crave it even more! At the end I wanted to read it so badly that it almost hurt! lol* I’m so glad I eventually managed to get to it because even though I had problems to get into the writing style at first, I still wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on this! ❤ Alex and Henry were pure MAGIC & LOVE!!! This book gave me so much hope and I’m so glad Casey McQuiston wrote it! If you want to read my in depth review you can do it here!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo:

33160963

I loved Evelyn Hugo and the way her story was told! This woman was amazing and I could totally imagine her as a real and famous person! All the press clippings made this seem even more real and I was completely taken by her story! By the end of the book it felt like Evelyn Hugo actually lived and my feelings were all over the place! ❤

– Vicious:

40874032__SY475_

V.E. Schwab definitely was my personal revelation of 2019. I loved „Vicious“ so much!!! The cat-and-mouse game between Victor and Eli gave me life and the fact that neither of them wanted to give up because they both thought they were right made this even more intriguing! But who was the actual villain? I’m still puzzling over this question, and I’m still not sure what the right answer is. *lol*

The Cruel Prince:

26032825

I have no idea why I waited so long to read this! Like seriously, what’s wrong with me? Maybe I already knew that I’d love it! I mean there are cruel and cunning faeries in this and everyone is plotting and scheming so what’s not to love? *lol* Plus FAERIES!!! I love to read stories about my own kind. 😛

We Are Okay:

28243032

I never thought I’d end up loving this book so much but this was one hell of an amazing read! The way Nina LaCour described grief was so tangible and real that you could feel it through the pages! „We Are Okay“ had a tough topic but it dealt with it in a gentle and beautiful way and I couldn’t help but adore it! ❤

The Meagre:

– Grace and Fury:

40619940

What can I say about „Grace and Fury“? Well, I really didn’t enjoy that one. There were way too many series and book tropes mixed into one and the more I read the more it felt like I was reading something already familiar. When I go into a book I just want to be surprised, I’ve nothing against a few tropes if they are done well, but they just didn’t work out for me in this one. I’m sorry to say it, but this just wasn’t for me.

Leah on the Offbeat:

36531619

Urgh. This was another one of my disappointments this year. I was really looking forward to read this but when I actually got to it I had to realize that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hoped I would. I didn’t get warm with Leah and I missed all the fluff that was „Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda“. Plus the bi-rep. *shakes head* Let’s just say I wasn’t very happy with it.

– Anna and the French Kiss:

19508953

I liked the first 50% of the book but after that it got really frustrating and I just couldn’t. The characters and their situation didn’t feel right for me so I couldn’t give this more than 3 paws. I don’t want to spoil anything in here but I was not okay with the way the love story developed and even though I’m pretty sure that a lot of people love this book all I can say is „I guess it just wasn’t for me.“ >_<

– Genuine Fraud:

33843362

How to put it nicely without hurting E. Lockhart’s feelings? *lol* Well, let’s just say I loved „We Were Liars“ and I was more than just a little bit disappointed by this one. I still don’t know where Lockhart wanted to go with it and if we’re already „genuine“ I have to admit that nothing in this book made sense to me. XD Sorry, but that was a clear „no“ from me.

– VOX:

41071289__SY475_

If 2019 taught me anything then it’s the fact that I better keep my greedy hands from dystopian science fiction books. *lol* No matter if it was „VOX““ or „The Power“ the injustice in those books always made me angry and I just can’t read them without being upset afterwards. XD So I figured I better avoid that genre for a while. Might help to put things into perpective.

The Series:

– The Illuminae Files:

25524728

Everyone who’s watched my progress with this series was bound to notice that I kind of devoured those books! *lol* I started to read „Illuminae“ in February and I never stopped. XD This was so, so, so damn good!!! I just loved everything about this series and the twists and turns had my head spinning and my mind reeling! This was nothing but amazing! ❤

The Lies of Locke Lamora:

865293

When I started to read this I never thought I’d end up enjoying it so much, but Locke and his band of bastards swept me off my feet and I became attached to each and every one of them. Locke’s mind and his noble thief attitude? Adorable and so very intriguing! I can’t wait to dive into „Red Seas Under Red Skies“ next year! I’m so ready for this! 😀

A Court of Thorns and Roses:

16096824

This was a reread but if anything I loved it even more the second time around! There were so many details I missed when I paged through the series about two years ago and I really appreciated those little bits and pieces. Plus I fell in love with Lucien all over again! I just love that man! Yes, Rhys is awesome too, but Lucien owns my heart!!! ❤

The Poppy War:

35068705

This book was just… well WOW! I didn’t read such a great fantasy book for quite a while and R.F. Kuang has all my respect for pulling this off. Still, there were quite some tough topics in this one and it certainly was no easy read. So if you want to read it I can totally recommend it, be careful and aware of all those triggers though. 😉

– Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass Series):

Sarah J. Maas

I started this series in 2017 and I finished it at the beginning of 2019. Considering there were 7 books (8 if you count „The Assassin’s Blade“) this was quite a feat! And so damn worth it!!! „Kingdom of Ash“ was such a great finale that I still didn’t finish writing my review! *lol* I hoped that I’d manage to write it until the end of the year but as it seems it will hit my blog in January. (Holiday Hiatus what did you do? XD) For now all you need to know is that I loved it! 😛

Rankenzeile

So this was my year 2019 in 15 books! How was your 2019? Was it a successful reading year? Did you manage to read all the books you wanted to read? Are there some you’ll take into the next year? Were you disappointed or surprised? Let me know in the comments! 😉

This said I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and I hope that your 2020 will be amazing!!! ❤
