SASSY Saturday

SASSY Saturday

Hey there my lovelies!

Welcome back to another round of my montly blog meme „SASSY Saturday“!

How does it work? Well, that’s easy! 😉

All you have to do is to follow those three golden rules:

1. Credit the creator of this tag (The Sassy Library Fox) and link back. (so I can see all your amazing answers!)
2. Answer the 5 questions below!
3. AND enjoy doing the blog meme! 😛

„SASSY Saturday“ is planned to be a monthly meme but if you want to do it more often feel free to go for it! This meme was created to get to know other bloggers, their new obsessions and to reflect on your own last month! Above all it was created to have fun though! 😉 If you want you can also use the banner I created! This said let’s head to the good part:

S – Series you loved this month

V Wars: Another vampire series with Ian Somerhalder? I was intrigued enough to start watching it. Funnily enough his character in this series is totally different than Damon in „Vampire Diaries“. He’s a husband, father and a scientist and when the world starts to bleed red under the rule of a new vampire species he has troubles to defend himself and his family. I enjoyed this series more than I thought I would so it’s a real bummer there isn’t going to be a season 2. =(

KinnPorsche: OMG!!! Honestly, this series is legit one of the best things IG introduced me to. I saw it mentioned in one of my friends stories and got curious and before I even knew it I went down the rabbit hole and only emerged after 14 episodes, crying my freaking eyes out at the ending! T_T I still have a hangover from this series and I can’t wait to watch season two! Also for everyone who wonders what the series is about: It’s a mafia m/m story where Porsche – a bartender – is forced to work as a bodyguard for Kinn – a mafia boss – because he saved his life one night. Of course the both don’t like each other at the beginning but boy was it so lovely to see them fall in love. Also there are so many amazing m/m side-couples and after episode 9 I think, I shipped two of them even more than I shipped the main couple! SO DAMN GOOD!!! Guys, if you haven’t watched this series you’re missing out! Seriously, the acting was amazing! I’m a fan now!

TJ Klune – The House in the Cerulean Sea

This was my first TJ Klune book and I read it while hosting my first #Klunealong ever! The Klunealong wasn’t only a lot of fun but the book was amazing! One of the most wholesome, sweet and precious books I ever read. I still get all warm and fuzzy feelings whenever I think about it. I loved the kids, I loved Arthur and Linus, I loved Zoe, I just loved everything about this! ❤ I can’t wait to go for Part II of my #Klunealong and to read „The Extraordinaries“. If you want to join, you can still do it! You can watch the video with all the details: here!

S – Song you couldn’t get enough of

J-Hope – MORE

And here I thought BTS going solo for a while meant that we wouldn’t get as much content as we’re used to but in fact it only meant: BTS content x 7! *lol* Boy, Hobi knocked it out of the park with his solo album „Jack in the Box“ and I love it so much! „MORE“ was the first single and wow, the lyrics hit hard! I bought the entire album as soon as I could and if you listen to it from the beginning to the end Hoseok is telling a story! This album is a brilliant masterpiece and I’m so damn proud of J-Hope!!! ❤

S – Surprise – Something that totally caught you off guard

That I got a horrible tonsillitis in the first month of my educational sabbatical. >_< It was no fun and I was knocked out cold for an entire week and it took me 2 additional weeks to recover fully. Like woah! This was extreme. But as for a good surprise: I did my first vlives on my BookTube channel and there were so many amazing BookTubers that supported me and joined the vlives. In the first vlive we were supposed to discuss the first 10 chapters of „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ but almost none of the watchers read the book, they were just there to talk with me. *lol* So sweet! Vlive Discussion No.2 was fun too because we really spoke about the book and it was so nice to hear other people’s opinions. XD So yeah it was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to my next vlive in August when I’ll discuss „The Extraordinaries“! =)

Y – Your fave blog post of another blogger

august 2022 anticipated releases by ella @ ella isn’t writing

I always love to read blog posts about anticipated releases because they make me aware of new books I didn’t even have on my radar! So a huge THANK YOU! to Ella for introducing me to a couple of new releases that automatically landed on my TBR! *lol* ❤ Loved to read your post!

What do you think about „SASSY Saturday“? Would you like to join the fun? Did you watch KinnPorsche too and if yes, did you love it as much as I did? Do you have other amazing m/m tv show recommendations for me?! XD Did you listen to „MORE“ and did you like this new kind of music style? What is something that surprised you last month?

Talk to me and let me know! 😉

And as always, stay healthy and safe!

July Wrap-Up

Wrap Up

July was… quite something! I wish I could say something good about July but I was extremely busy at the beginning of the month because I finally started my educational sabbatical. *lol* For the first time in years I actually had to study and even had to do lots of homework. Which was something totally new for me after such a long time out of school. XD I’m enjoying my educational sabbatical though and so far I aced every homework and always got the best grade! (Honestly this is something new because after I turned 15 I never was a straight-A-student. Haha I mean I wasn’t super bad but I had to work really hard for good grades!)

So, yeah my educational sabbatical started out pretty well. Unfortunately my hubby got ill during the second week of July and even though I kept my distance to him and even slept on the sofa for a couple of days he still managed to „gift“ me his tonsillitis. I swear I was so ill you have no idea. I basically spent 3 days having a 39,5+ fever and couldn’t do anything except of sleep. When I finally managed to go to the doc I got a prescription for antibiotics and had to take them for 10 days straight. I got so tired from the antibiotics I basically didn’t do a lot for the rest of July. I took my last one on Saturday but I’m still kinda exhausted from being ill. Like I’m not at a 100% and it’s starting to get annoying. *lol*

I really hope that sooner or later I’ll be back to full health but for now it seems like I’ll have to live with about 60 – 70%. Who knew a tonsillitis would kick my butt like that? *shakes head* So yep, this was my July and I’m behind on everything. My backlog on reviews is huge because I had to prioritize and of course my studies came first. I eventually managed to get back on track now but all the rest, my BookTube channel, IG, reviews, reading, etc. suffered. Well, I hope I’ll at least be able to get up my August TBR video soon. If I wouldn’t have started some of the books in June already and wouldn’t have had those first two healthy weeks of July I probably wouldn’t have read anything. Haha! Anyway! Speaking of books, let’s just do this wrap-up and be done with it! 😉

Books read: 4 (4 books & 0 webcomic, I actually managed to read four books! Yay!)

Pages read: 1.879 (I think this is the most I read in a long time. It might have only been 4 books but 3 of them were 400+ pages long)

Average rating: 4,38 (Those 4 books were so different but I really enjoyed them all so much.)

Books that were on my reading list: 2 ( 0 from 2020, 1 from 2021 and 1 from 2022. I can’t help being a mood reader, but I’m getting better! )

July Reads:

Spinning Silver: 4 Pfoten

It took me forever to read this book, but not because it was bad, I guess I was just in a bad reading slump when I picked it up in February. >_< Once I started to read it it for real I actually finished it in a couple of days. XD I kinda loved the story and the different characters. The Tsar and Irina had me totally intrigued and the Staryk king and Miryem were super interesting too. Plus I had no idea how the book would end and that’s always a good thing in my book. =)

House of Sky and Breath: 4 Pfoten,5

THIS BOOK!!! ADFKADLFASKDFAJSDFKASDFJ! If I’d have known how it ends I would have waited until the 3rd book is out because damn to wait for the next book is going to be pure torture! T_T Thankfully I read this book as a buddy read with the lovely Jessi @ Plot Twists with Jessi and now we can both suffer together. *lol* A problem shared is a problem halved. Or so they say. *sobs in a corner* Oh yeah, before I continue to sob: There will be a full and proper review about this book in the future. 😉

Death Note – Volume 3: 4 Pfoten

I’m so behind on writing reviews and my backlog isn’t normal anymore, but I actually wrote one for „Death Note – Volume 3“ and you can read it here! I really love this manga series but I have no idea how the author is going to keep the arc of suspense throughout the entire series because damn… Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 were already so tense! I’m in awe of the cat-and-mouse game between L and Light and boy… I can’t wait to see where this is heading. I doubt it will have a good end though. Someone is going to get hurt and I have no idea who it will be. XD

The House in the Cerulean Sea: 5 Pfoten

„The House in the Cerulean Sea“ was my first TJ Klune book ever and I read it with a couple of people while I hosted my #Klunealong! It’s really one of the most wholesome books ever and when I did my second vlive last Sunday I couldn’t help but gush about the book while we discussed it! Such an amazing story and I really love all the characters so much! If all of Klune’s books are like that I can’t wait to go for part 2 of my Klunealong in August! We’ll start to read „The Extraordinaries“ on August 6th! And if you want to join you can always follow the link above to my first #Klunealong Announcement. I’ll make sure to get up the new video soon so that’s why I don’t have a link for „The Extraordinaries“ yet. You can always send me a comment as well though and I’ll send you the details. If you really want to join I’m sure we’ll find a way to get in touch.;-)

This said: How was your July? Did you read a lot of books? I hope you were healthier than I was and were able to enjoy the good weather. (Over here it was really hot and sunny! XD)  Did you read any of the books I read as well and if yes did you enjoy them? Which book was your highlight of July? Do you want to take part in Part2 of my #Klunealong?!

Review: The Fever King (Victoria Lee)

39897058

Rating: 5 Pfoten

Book 32 on My Book List 2021

”Governments didn’t have to listen to the people until the people made it hurt not to listen.”

The backlog of reviews I still have to write is no joke; I mean I finished this book in May and only managed to sit down and write my review now. Regardless of my review backlog I really wanted to write about “The Fever King” though because WOW, this book deserves a proper review! I wanted to read this book for ages and it always reappeared on my feed with people raving about it. So I was intrigued enough by the plot to put it on my TBR and when I discovered that my library actually had a copy, I couldn’t help but borrow it! And let me tell you this: I regret absolutely nothing!

This was amazing and legit one of the best books I read in 2022 so far! I didn’t expect to fall head over heels for this story and its characters but at some point I realized that all my thoughts revolved around this book and that it stayed with me even when I didn’t read it. And this even though the story line is nothing new. I mean, people with special abilities is a trope that’s been used very often in YA literature. One of the main differences in here is the fact that those abilities come with a virus that either kills the people it infects or grants them special powers if they survive. That concept alone was already very intriguing and definitely made this an interesting story to read. What really made this special were the characters though.

So many secrets, so much political intrigue, such interesting and complex characters and two very broken boys that tried their best to survive in a cruel world. I just loved everything about it. Noam and Dara were just wow! I love it when books make me think and cause me to feel conflicted about the characters and this was exactly what happened in here. I had no idea which side I was on and this was great. XD Anyway, before I accidentally spoil anything I’ll just head to my characters section and continue to rave over there. 😉

2
Welcome to Carolinia! Where manipulation thrives and political intrigues are a daily occurrence! Take care and beware not only of the virus but also of all the spoilers! They’ll get you when you least expect it! ;-P

Noam Álvaro :

”And I meant it when I said I wasn’t gay,“ Noam said.
Ames looked disbelieving, but she didn’t pull away.
Noam smirked. „Bisexual isn’t gay.“

Where to start with Noam?! I really liked his character and it was interesting to follow his POV. I felt the same confusion Noam did when it came to Dara’s and Lehrer’s relationship and I tried really hard to understand it. There are so many things Noam isn’t aware of and we get to experience everything through his eyes. I felt really sorry for him though because he tries his best to find his way in a world that hasn’t been kind to him and as a refugee and the son of undocumented immigrants his life has never been easy. Well, and then his father dies and Noam is basically an orphan with super powers he has no control over. I swear Noam is the embodiment of a lost boy and I really liked his character. Also can we appreciate that he’s openly bisexual and calls people out when they assume his sexuality?! XD I really loved that about him because despite all the things he’s been through he knows exactly who he is and where he stands and this is pretty amazing! =)

”Everything worth doing had its risks.
And sometimes you had to do the wrong thing to achieve something better.
Noam was willing to gamble with Lehrer’s persuasion if it meant securing a future for Atlantians. What kind of person would he be if he didn’t?”

Dara Shirazi:

„Dara’s eyes were black wells, pupils bleeding into iris.
„You can study all you want,“ he said softly. „It isn’t going to make a difference.“

Oh Dara, my beautiful, beautiful Dara!!! T_T My heart breaks just thinking of him and I can’t even fathom what he must have gone through all his life. His character was written so well and you know that something about him is off but you can’t exactly pinpoint it and you keep wondering until the end. And then BAM! Oh my! The more I read about his character the more I got on the right track but to actually read it and to have all my suspicions confirmed was an entirely different thing. Dara just tried to protect himself and Noam and he did it the only way he could. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the ending had me reeling! I really need to know if he’s okay and if he survived and I’m planning to read book two very soon because I just can’t wait any longer! I’m very scared of what I’ll read in the next book though because I’m pretty certain we’ll get more details and uff… this is going to be tough. I just want to hug Dara and tell him everything is going to be okay. T_T

He hesitated for a moment, darting a quick glance at Noam from beneath his lashes. Then: “I’d like to live out on a farm somewhere. With a garden, and maybe some goats. Somewhere I can see the stars.”

”There was so much more to Dara than the cold, bitter facade he’d presented. He was that, too, but he was also Dara: the effortless genius, the political critic and poker cheat, the boy who analyzed everything he read according to poststructuralist theory and kept fresh flowers in a vase on his bedside table. Dara, who claimed he hated everything but secretly dreamed of counting the stars.”

Calix Lehrer:

”Clever?” Lehrer said. “So are you. And you’re curious, as I was. You’ve lost a great deal, as I had. And you believe, as I did, that if you are powerful enough, no one will ever be able to hurt you again.”

Lehrer…. THIS manipulative, horrible man!!! I always knew that something about him was weird and extremely off, but urgh nothing prepared me for the revelations at the ending of the book. Damn! Some part of me admires how well he crafted his net of lies and machinations and yes, I admit it, I can’t help but marvel at his manipulations as well! But boy! This man is so, so, so bad and everyone is dancing after his pipe even though they don’t know it. What a brilliant and manipulative son of a b*tch! I think Adalwolf was totally right when he said that Calix’s trauma did irreparable damage to his mind. He clearly has no regard for people’s lives anymore and he uses them like he’d use chess pieces to win a match. I hate him. I despise him. But I can’t help but be intrigued by him. ARGH!!! Thanks for making me a conflicted mess Victoria Lee! *lol* Still, I think in his twisted mind he thinks he’s actually doing the right thing and truly believes that he cares about Carolinia. The things that happened to him though… my heart broke for the little boy he was. T_T It was horrible and inhuman and those scientists created a monster…

”Adalwolf was of the belief,” Lehrer said, “that what I experienced in the hospital made me ill suited for leadership. He believed the trauma did irreparable damage to my mind.”

”Now, even though he occupied one of the most powerful positions in the world, Minister Lehrer could walk into the courtyard of the government complex utterly alone, without bodyguards, and not spare a thought for safety. He was untouchable, more myth than man. To look at Lehrer was to see a man who was everything Chancellor Sacha was not: Revolutionary. Principled. Witching.”

”I used my power on Sacha because he had to be stopped,” Lehrer said. “At any cost. I care about nothing as much as I care about this country. I was there when this nation was born, Noam, and like hell will I watch it die at the hands of a baseline.”

3
Noam & Dara:

”What did Lehrer tell you?”
“He said you were troubled and that I should stay away from you.”
Dara’s smile was bladed. He had Noam captured there as thoroughly as if he’d tied him down, because Noam couldn’t imagine moving when Dara was looking at him like that.

My two soft boys!!! T_T I really loved them together! Even though they kinda made me mad! *lol* There was so much tension between them and so many little gestures, but they both didn’t know how to be close to each other because their entire life they always tried to protect themselves from harm. To see their struggle was so heart-breaking. They wanted to be together but at the same time they couldn’t. There was so much distrust between them and they felt so conflicted about their feelings. Noam as well as Dara were hurt in so many ways… two broken boys that tried their best to get through the day and then Lehrer added even more fuel to the fire by manipulating them both. This only made it even harder for them to understand and to trust each other. From Dara’s POV it must have been so heart-wrenching because he knew exactly what Lehrer was capable of but he just couldn’t do anything against it. >_< My poor boy!! Also: I can’t believe we went from “I love you.” to “I hate you and don’t care about you.” right to “I love you.” again! Phew! Their relationship was such a rollercoaster and I really hope it will have more consistency in the next book?! Gosh, I just hope Dara survived the virus! T_T

”There was no way to look without sliding off his armrest and moving into Dara’s space. But Dara seemed to want that. His hand caught Noam’s wrist and tugged him closer, until Noam was leaning over him with his free hand braced against the windowsill, Dara’s left thigh perilously close to Noam’s groin, and, fuck.”

”I know you. And I love you.”
Two weeks ago, Noam would have been the happiest person in the world. Now those words were poison. Noam tasted venom like heat on his tongue.
“So read my mind,” Noam said, brandishing a hand toward his own temple. “I believe you, Dara. I just don’t care.”

”He was crying, Noam realized. Dara was crying.
Very carefully, Noam wrapped his arms around Dara’s body and just … held him there, while both of Dara’s hands took fistfuls of his shirt and clung on tight. He was feverish hot; Noam could feel it even through the sweater Dara wore. It was like holding on to a live coal.”

”I know,” Noam said. He tried to grin, but it felt weak. He said, “I love you too.” and he grasped Dara’s face between both hands and kissed him on his shocked mouth. Dara didn’t resist. Dara didn’t say a word, even when Noam pushed him back and into the car and slammed the door shut behind him.

Noam & Lehrer:

”I can’t be anywhere near this. You know that,” Lehrer said, hand tightening slightly on Noam’s wrist. “It has to be you.”

URGH!!! I absolutely hate how Lehrer manipulated Noam. We get to see everything through Noam’s POV and it was so … I dunno. Disgusting to read about how Lehrer found a way into his mind and nudged his thoughts in the “right direction”. I felt so violated just reading about it and I don’t even want to know how Noam feels. Lehrer’s power… it’s horrible and the worst thing is that you only realize it very slowly. A little thought here and a small seed there and before I even knew it Noam and his thoughts were completely manipulated by him. Nothing he did at the ending was of his own will and I hated this so much!! ARGH!! Lehrer is such a cruel piece of … ! The only thing that was truly Noam was when he saved Dara and organized a transport for him. The rest… well it was all Lehrer and considering how much he hurt Dara and manipulated him I don’t even want to know what he’s going to do with Noam in the next book. T_T I’m afraid I’ll be in for a world of suffering and pain. >_< Or well, Noam will be and I’ll live through it alongside him.

Dara & Lehrer:

Dara, sick with fevermadness, his hands on Noam’s face. Saying, “You have to listen to me.”
Over and over.
Lehrer, pulling Dara away like it was easy.
Dara screaming. Don’t let them and Please and Noam’s name, like someone praying the Shema.

This scene broke my heart into tiny little pieces! Noam was the only good thing that ever happened to Dara and Lehrer made sure to take him away from him as well. My poor boy! Dara was so ill and weak and he couldn’t even fight him. Did I already mention that I hate what Lehrer did to Dara?! I always got bad vibes from Lehrer and he failed my vibe check the moment I read about him. What finally settled it was that disturbing scene with the dead bird though. After that I was totally on guard when it came to Lehrer. And the abuse Dara suffered from Lehrer… It wasn’t just physically but also mentally and I have no idea how he could live like that for so long. No one ever noticed and it’s just so horrible. To think that Lehrer should have been his guardian and parent – a person he could trust and rely on – and what he did instead. And we only just discovered the tip of the iceberg. I’m sure there’s so much more to come in the next book and I really don’t think I’m ready for it.

4
I rarely say this about books but “The Fever King” was really such a well thought-out book. The characters were multi-layered and complex and the storyline kept me on my toes. All the intrigues and secrets caused me to constantly rethink and readjust my theories and thoughts and the love story between the two MCs broke my heart. I guess you can already tell that this was definitely a 5 paws read for me. Highly recommended if you’re like me and appreciate character driven books that feature political intrigues and give you a headache because you’re trying your best to figure out the MCs motives. 😉 I can’t wait to dive into book two, but I gotta admit I’m kinda scared of reading it too.

Review: The Scorpio Races (Maggie Stiefvater)

11210739

Rating: 5 Pfoten

”Somewhere close by, a man is moaning; he’s been trampled or thrown or bitten. He sounds resentful or surprised. Did no one tell him that pain lives in this sand, dug in and watered with our blood?”

I really don’t know where I should start with this review because just like any of Maggie’s other books this one wasn’t only magical but also so damn atmospheric that it’s more than just hard to put my feelings into proper words. There is something in the way she writes that always captures the emotions and the essence of a certain season or time. In “Shiver” it was winter, in TRC it’s that foggy, otherworldly atmosphere of Cabeswater and in “The Scorpio Races” it was autumn and the daily life on an island.

I swear I could feel the cold autumn wind on my skin and I could smell the leaves and the sea with my nose while I read this book. It was done so perfectly that I immerged into a totally different world and just like Puck and Sean (and Craig ;-P) I couldn’t help but fall in love with the capaill uisce. Those water horses were so awesome, I can’t even! <333

”The capaill uisce plunged down the sand, skirmishing and bucking, shaking the sea foam out of their manes and the Atlantic from their hooves. They screamed back to the others still in the water, high wails that raised the hair on my arms. They were swift and deadly, savage and beautiful. The horses were giants, at once the ocean and the island, and that was when I loved them.”

I love how Maggie described them and I also love that she researched the myths and folklore of water horses. They are indeed very fascinating and if you want to delve a little deeper you just have to look them up under “cabyll-ushtey”. Anyway, back to the actual water horses of this book! They were amazing and I loved their beautiful, violent and graceful nature! It’s kind of obvious Maggie has some experience with horses because I think otherwise she would have never been able to write about them so convincingly. There’s a deep respect in her words and you can feel it whenever you read Sean’s or Pucks POV! And tell you what? I loved that aspect of the book! It made it so good and realistic that I was almost convinced those horses actually exist. *lol*

And this ultimately brings me right to the two main characters of “The Scorpio Races”. Puck Connolly and Sean Kendrick! <333

”And then I see him. A dark-haired boy who is made of all corners. He is standing next in line by the counter, silent and still in his blue-black jacket, his arms folded across his chest. He looks out of place and wild in here: expression sharp, collar turned up against the back of his neck, hair still windblown from the beach.”

”My mother always said that I was born out of a bottle of vinegar instead of born from a womb and that she and my father bathed me in sugar for three days to wash it off. I try to behave, but I always go back to the vinegar.”

I adored them both! XD Sean Kendrick was a mystery to everyone but himself and Puck Connolly was an open book that had its own secrets. They were two really intriguing characters and before I even knew it, I was already pulling for them. *lol* Even though they both had a rather rough life they still decided to fight for their dreams and they truly did everything possible in order to achieve their goals. They really dealt with every blow that came their way and they did it with fierce determination! ❤

”The truth is this: for eleven months of the year I make myself valuable to Malvern, and then for one month, I make myself invaluable. Would he be willing to give up that one month to keep the other eleven? Am I willing to risk it?”

”Why is it that going away is the standard? Does anyone ask you why you stay, Sean Kendrick?”
“They do.”
“And why do you?”
“The sky and the sand and the sea and Corr.”

This is such a perfect quote because Sean and Puck ARE the embodiment of the island. They are deeply rooted in its sand and unlike so many of the islands other inhabitants they can’t even imagine to leave it one day. It’s their heart, their home and the place they belong to and I think Maggie conveyed that feeling more than just well. =) Still, the island is its own entity and there are people that make it hard to enjoy the wilderness of this land. First and foremost Benjamin Malvern and his demon of a son called Mutt.

”And I told you before, I’ll sell you any of the thoroughbreds.”
“I didn’t make any of those thoroughbreds. I didn’t make them what they are.”
Malvern says, “You made all of them what they are.”
I don’t look at him. “None of them made me who I am.”

”Mr Kendrick was born on a horse and he’ll die on one, and maybe that’s not something you can breed for. He’s one of those rare men who can make a horse work for him but never asks for more than they have.”

It was so obvious that Benjamin Malvern had a deep respect for Sean, yet at the same time he refused to let him go. Ever the business man he tied him to his stable making him just another one of his precious horses. I hated Benjamin Malvern so much for that and I despised him even more for being aware of Sean’s talent and keeping him under his thumb. And I don’t even want to speak about Mutt Malvern that – excuse my crude language – sadistic douche bag! Gosh, there were moments I wanted to slap some sense into him and I am a pacifist and actually never slapped anyone. (My only weapons are words! *lol*) ARGH! Just to think about Mutt makes my blood boil, such a despicable a******!!! >_<

”At the sound of them, the red stallion flinches, as if the bells are physically painful, and I find myself unexpectedly blinking away tears.
Sean Kendrick turns his face away.
There’s something so wretched in that that I can’t just leave him there by himself.”

I swear Sean and Puck had to put up with so many things before the races and I loved them so much for never giving up! Plus I also liked that Puck was the first woman to ever take part in the races! Thank you Maggie for inventing a strong female character people are able to look up to! We still need more of those! ❤ And last but not least another thing I’m very thankful for: A slow, realistic burn and a relationship that was built on mutual respect and the love for their horses and home!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT!!! <333

I say, “I will not be your weakness, Sean Kendrick.”
Now he looks at me. He says, very softly, “It’s late for that, Puck.”

All told I really loved this book! “The Scorpio Races” was an awesome “ride” and the ending was as bittersweet as dark chocolate with a pinch of salt in it. T_T
Highly recommended and definitely once again an amazing Maggie Stiefvater book! 😉

Since this was another buddy read with my amazing Sugar Bun I want to use the chance to thank him for this cool and funny BR! I think our next one is already pending. Do you still have a copy of “Linger”? *lol* I have the feeling that you’ll need a yucky romance soon. Haha! ;-P

First Kill: My Yoongi and I were actually watching another k-drama when we saw this drop on Netflix and we just couldn’t resist! *lol* I mean an f/f Romeo and Juliette retelling? We both wanted to watch this and decided to go for the first episode. Well, what can I say? Before we even knew it we were right smack in the middle of the series and had almost gone through the 8 episodes in no time. *lol* It was really good. Pretty gory at some parts but also super interesting. I loved the family dynamics so much and I hope for a second season!!!

A – Author you discovered

58847001. sy475

Axie Oh – XOXO

I wanted to read „XOXO“ for ages and finally picked it up as a cozy comfort read and it was exactly that! I loved all the Korean expressions and the food that was mentioned in here and the love story was really cute and nice to read. I just wish there would have been even more of the love story? *lol* I dunno. I just wanted even more, I guess. XD

S – Song you couldn’t get enough of

Charlie Puth feat. Jung Kook – Left And Right

Okay, ever since BTS decided to take a break as a band I can’t keep up with their content anymore. *lol* Not that I’m complaining! I love that they all get a chance to express themselves now and that they don’t have to follow the typical boyband rules anymore. So yeah, I’ve been living my best life following all of my 7 boys and JK’s collabo with Charlie Puth was the first song that was released after their announcement. And wow, what a great song it is. I can’t get it out of my mind anymore because it’s such a catchy tune. Or to say it with the songs lyrics: „You take up every corner of my mind.“ *lol*

S – Surprise – Something that totally caught you off guard

That June was over so fast! Haha! Honestly, this was the biggest surprise ever! It was the first time in my adult life (and I’ve been working for years now!) I actually had 4 weeks vacation and they passed by so quickly I still don’t know where they went. *lol* But I guess in the end the only thing that matters is that really I enjoyed those four weeks and well, I enjoyed at least 3 of them (one out of those four was spent at home with my ill kid…) so I count that as a win! 😉

Y – Your fave blog post of another blogger

„F/F Recommendations“ by Elli @ AceReader

I always complain that there aren’t enough f/f romances to read and when I saw Elli’s post I was so happy because: YAY!!! Finally some great f/f recommendations I hadn’t known yet! So thank you Elli for sharing this post with us! It was amazing and my TBR grew once again. XD

What do you think about „SASSY Saturday“? Would you like to join the fun? Did you watch „First Kill“ too and if yes did you enjoy it? =) Which kind of song is stuck in your head and you can’t seem to be able to stop singing it? And which blog post of another blogger was your favourite last month? Care to share the link?

Talk to me and let me know! 😉

And as always, stay healthy and safe!

June Wrap-Up

Wrap Up

I really thought June would be different. I mean I basically had an entire month of vacation and you’d think I would have gotten a lot of things done, but nope. I barely even managed to do the things I wanted to do and there were like a gazillion of reasons why things didn’t work out as planned. For one, my kid got ill the very first day I was on vacation. Like seriously. It was my last day at work, I picked her up from kindergarten and the moment we were at home she had a fever. *lol*

So the first week of my vacation was spent at home, tending to my ill kid and hoping she would get healthy soon. XD Basically right after that I had to start packing because we went on a holiday for the first time in 3 years. It was only four days at a golf and spa hotel but boy was it amazing! I totally forgot how nice it is when someone else does all the cooking and housework for you. *lol* I could finally relax and had a lot of fun with my family and even though it was only a short time I really enjoyed it so much. 😀 Still, right after that we went into the madness of organizing lots of birthdays because June is full of it. I swear about half of my family has birthday in June. >_<

And before I even knew it June was almost over. *lol* I used a couple of days to reorganize my bookshelves, to meet my bestie and to visit some libraries in Vienna. Plus I finally cleaned up my wardrobe and donated a huge sack of clothes to our local social market. I wish I could have checked even more things off my To-Do list but those were the ones I really wanted to do. XD So I partly succeded. Due to all of this I didn’t manage to read a lot though and it shows in my statistics of June. And here I thought June was going to be an awesome reading month for me. *lol* I should have known real life would kick my butt. Haha! Anyway! Let’s rip off the band-aid and get to it!

Books read: 3 (3 books & 0 webcomic, and here I thought June would be a better reading month?! >_<)

Pages read: 1.160 (At least it were more than 1.000 pages. *lol*)

Average rating: 3,34 (I think this gotta be the lowest rating I ever gave…)

Books that were on my reading list: 0 ( 0 from 2020, 0 from 2021 and 1 from 2022. Considering I only read 3 books it’s kinda good one was from my TBR? I count that as a win. XD )

June Reads:

40106539. sy475     48906722. sy475     58847001. sy475

Children of Virtue and Vengeance: 2 Pfoten,5

I really enjoyed the first book of this series „Children of Blood and Bone“! I had my issues with it but overall I enjoyed the beginning of this series and I had such high hopes for the second installment. And I’m so sorry to say this, but all my hopes where shattered! T_T I rarely give the books I read 2,5 paws but this one… puh it so didn’t work for me. Honestly so many things in this book rubbed me the wrong way and by the end of it I think I didn’t like a single one of the characters anymore. (except of Roen, Roen is a babe! ❤ *lol*) It’s one thing to make complex and morally grey characters but to make readers hate all of your characters… wow, that’s a feat! XD Anyway, I will definitely write a long and elaborate review about this and explain why it didn’t work for me. So stay tuned and watch out for it. 😉

Whispers Underground: 3 Pfoten,5

This was already the third book in this urban fantasy series and it took me ages to get to it. Honestly, I think I must have borrowed it about 10 times from my library before I finally managed to actually read it. *lol* But it was worth the wait. I had a good time reading „Whispers Underground“. It wasn’t the best book I ever read but it also wasn’t the worst. It was an enjoyable read and pretty fast and easy to get through. So yeah. I’m very curious how this series is going to continue and I hope that the next couple of books will finally give me more info about Nightingale. XD

XOXO: 4 Pfoten

I’ve been dying to read this book ever since I heard that it’s about a k-pop idol falling in love with a Cello prodigy and I couldn’t wait to pick this story up. XD Jenny and Jaewoo were so cute and I really enjoyed their interactions. It was fun to read about all those typical Korean dishes and to see the phrases and expressions I know from k-dramas written out in the book. *lol* I think I learned some things about Korean culture as well and I really liked that. As for the love story between the two MCs: It was cute but I kinda wanted more? I dunno how to describe it but I just wanted more. Maybe that’s just a me thing, though? I’ll make sure to explain it better in my review. 😉

This said: How was your June? Did you read a lot of books and if yes can you recommend some? Did you already read any of the books I read last month? Did you enjoy them? Were you already on vacation or are you planning to go on one? =) What kind of tasks do you want to get to but never manage to do until you have vacation?

Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Summer 2022 To-Read List

TTT was created by The Broke and Bookish and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl (click here for upcoming TTT topics!).

Today’s Topic is: Books On My Summer 2022 To-Read List – Now this is going to be a fun list because most of those books I borrowed from my library and need to read in time. 😉

1.) „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ by T.J. Klune

45047384. sy475

I’ll finally read this gem in July!!! I’m hosting my first readalong ever and I named it #Klunealong because in July we’ll be reading „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ and in August… well, the voting for this one is still open so I dunno which book we’ll read. *lol* If you’re interested in joining here’s the link to the official blog post I wrote about it: Readalong Announcement: „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ – #Klunealong  My bestie was so kind to make a discord as well so we can chat about our reading process while we read the book! 😉 I’d love it if you’d join, the more the merrier! ❤

2.) „Camp“ by L.C. Rosen

53115194. sx318 sy475

I finally put this book on my TBR for July because I loved „Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts)“ when I read it and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one as well. 🙂 Also I needed a short book I could read in July aside of „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ because I’m sure I’ll be very busy with hosting my #Klunealong. *lol* I really have no idea what I got myself into. XD

3.) „Rebel“ by Marie Lu

42121526

It’s about time I finish this series! I mean I already read and loved the „Legend“ trilogy but I still haven’t picked up this book. As far as I could tell by the blurb this plays after the main trilogy and is about Day’s brother Eden. I still hope that we’ll get Day and June though because I’m still not okay after reading the ending of the trilogy. I mean… that ending! I can’t let it stand like that! Please Marie Lu, give me something good! I beg you! T_T

4.) „The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue“ by V.E. Schwab

51029834. sy475

This book has been on my TBR ever since it was an ARC and I can’t wait to pick it up! I heard so many great things about it. Funnily enough I also heard a couple of negative reviews by now, so I’m very curious if it will live up to my expectations. The premise sounds way too good though and since I loved all of Schwab’s books so far I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy this one too. I guess the only way to find out it by reading it. 😉

5.) „Darius the Great Is Not Okay“ by Adib Khorram

37506437

I recently found this in my library and instantly snatched it from the shelf! *lol* I heard so many great things about Adib Khorram and since he recently released „Kiss & Tell“ I thought it’s about time I pick up one of his books and start reading! XD He might actually become one of my new fave authors if I end up loving his books so fingers crossed my prediction will come true! Very curious if this is going to be great! (yeah, that was a subtle pun. ;-P)

6.) „A Very Large Expanse of Sea“ by Tahereh Mafi

38720939. sy475

So far the only books I know by Tahereh Mafi are her „Shatter Me“ books and I absolutely loved the original trilogy. (Book 4 and 5 were okay, but book 6… let’s just say it so didn’t work for me! >_< ) Anyway! I still love the original trilogy so I’m ready to find out how Mafi’s writing style is going to work in a completely different setting. This sounds really intriguing and I’m ready to dive into it! =)

7.) „The Kingdom of Back“ by Marie Lu

45872054. sy475

I gotta be honest with you: I had no idea Marie Lu even wrote this book! *lol* I read so many Marie Lu books already and loved every single one of them („Legend series“, „Batman“, „The Young Elites“, „Warcross“, you name it!) but for some reason I never heard of this one until I found it in my library. Needless to say I had to take it with me! Especially because this seems to be about Mozart’s sister Nannerl and as someone who was born and raised in Austria this is just too interesting not to pick it up! I am intrigued! XD

8.) „Legendborn“ by Tracy Deonn

55507414. sy475

There was a time when this book was all over my feed and I couldn’t escape it so I got really curious and wanted to read „Legendborn“ as well. Thankfully my library finally got a copy of it and I went for it as soon as I found out. (Sorry to everyone who wanted to preorder it, I was really fast. ;-P) As far as I could gather from a couple of reviews this is some sort of arthurian retelling and I always dig them so yep, I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one too.

9.) „Nick and Charlie“ by Alice Oseman

56951957. sy475

This is probably one of the few books of Alice Oseman I still haven’t read. I mean I read almost all of her books by now and I just love them so damn much! (I still hope to get my hands on one of those amazing book cases that has all the books in it. XD I’m sure it will happen one day!) I’m kinda worried about picking this one up though because it’s about Nick and Charlie going seperate ways and I just don’t want them to. *lol* I only want them to be happy and I dunno if I’ll get this in here so yeah… I guess I’ll just have to read it to find out. Please have mercy, Alice!

10.) „Call Down the Hawk“ by Maggie Stiefvater

31373184

So technically I already started to read the first chapter of this book and I’m once again blown away by Maggie’s writing style. I forgot how much I love her lyrical and magical approach of things. ❤ Ahhh! Honestly I could have marked about a million quotes in the prologue alone! I know I’m going to love this and I’m so ready to dive even deeper into the book! I’m going to cherish every single word. =)

Rankenzeile

So what about you? Which books are on your summer TBR? Did you read any of the books on my list or do we have some in common? Does it always take you so long to pick up anticipated books as well? Do you borrow books from your library or do you buy them? And the most important question of them all: Do you want to participate in my #Klunealong?

Talk to me and let me know!

And as always take care and stay healthy and safe! ❤

Review: Almond (Won-Pyung Sohn)

52219386. sx318 sy475

Rating: 4 Pfoten

”This story is, in short, about a monster meeting another monster. One of the monsters is me.”

It’s been ages I buddy read “Almond” with my friend Katja but I really wanted to write a review about the book. Unfortunately my life got in the way and I neither read as much as I wanted to nor did I manage to write reviews about the books I finished. I’m going to rectify that now though and after I wrote this review there will follow a couple of other reviews as well. So watch out for them. It’s about time I write them down. 😉 This said, let’s head right back to the actual review and speak about “Almond”.

”Granny, why do people call me weird?”
Her lips loosened.
“Maybe it’s because you’re special. People just can’t stand it when something is different, eigoo, my adorable little monster.”
Granny hugged me so tight my ribs hurt. She always called me a monster. To her, that wasn’t a bad thing.

I wanted to read this book for a while and when my dear friend Katja asked me to read it together for the #Koreadathon I immediately said yes. We picked it for the “read a book recommended by a Korean celebrity” prompt and the fact that RM as well as SUGA of BTS read it and enjoyed it was enough reason to go for it as well. I trust my boys taste in books and I’m really glad I decided to go for “Almond” because it was an intriguing read and very thought-provoking. The plot of the book is easily described: It’s about a boy named Yunjae who was born with a brain condition named alexithymia which basically means that he can’t feel emotions. The part of his brain that is responsible for our feelings (and formed like an almond, hence the book title) isn’t fully developed and that causes him to have troubles to understand human emotions. Our MCs mother and his grandmother tried their best to teach him how to cope with his lack of emotions but then one day tragedy hits and Yunjae is left to fend for himself.

”People sometimes say how cool it’d be to be fearless, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. Fear is an instinctive defense mechanism necessary for survival. Not knowing fear doesn’t mean that you’re brave; it means you’re stupid enough to stay standing on the road when a car is charging towards you.”

I had so many thoughts when I read this book and a lot of them had to do with the way Yunjae was raised. I know his mother and grandmother only had the best intentions and wanted him to blend in with everyone, but I think to some extent their constant efforts made it even more difficult for him to deal with his condition. Emotions are something you can’t learn because human feelings are very complex and some people will cry because they are happy while others will laugh even though they are sad. You might be able to explain the general reasons behind behaviour like crying but every person is an individual and we all react differently when we’re overwhelmed by our feelings. The fine nuances of emotions… well they are something you can’t learn. So even though I understood where Yunjae’s mother was coming from I still didn’t agree with her methods. It felt like Yunjae was under a lot of pressure to learn “the proper reactions” and I kinda felt sorry for him.

”Dr. Shim was right – being ordinary was the trickiest path. Everyone thinks “ordinary” is easy and all, but how many of them would actually fit into the so-called smooth road the word implied?”

Well, and then his grandma died and his mother was out of the picture as well, leaving him to fight through all the troubles on his own. Okay, almost all on his own because Dr. Shim was amazing and I loved that he helped him out! Honestly, bless his soul because he just accepted Yunjae the way he was and tried to help him as best as he could. ❤ But Dr. Shim isn’t the only one that helped him to find his way and Gon as well as Dora had an impact on the MCs character development.

”Dora. Dora was exactly the polar opposite of Gon. If Gon tried to teach me pain, guilt and agony, Dora taught me flowers and scents, breezes and dreams.”

I loved the way this was put, because it sums up their different personalities and essence so well. With Dora Yunjae discovered the soft feelings of first love and attraction and with Gon he learned about true friendship and hardships. Some might say Gon was a catalyst and I’m inclined to agree with that, but I also think that Dora’s appearance was at least as vital to Yunjae’s development as Gon’s. Both played a very important part in the MCs life and contributed to his experiences.

”About what?”
“About destiny and time.”
“What a surprise to hear those words from you.”
“Sheesh, did you know that even when you say the simplest things, you sound like a dick?”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Now you know.”
“Yes, thanks.”

I really loved the bluntness between Gon and Yunjae! They took each other the way they were and they didn’t try to pretend to be someone else when they were in each other’s company. I think this might have actually been the main reason their friendship could bloom and evolve because the way they met definitely wasn’t the best start. (And that’s an understatement right there.) I’m not going to spoil anything here though. 😉 Despite being unable to feel emotions the same way other people do Yunjae was quite a wise person sometimes and could look through people’s disguises with surprising ease. I suppose you could also say that because of his disability to feel emotions he was probably more perceptive than others?

”She said families walk hand in hand. Granny would hold my other hand. I have never been abandoned by anyone. Even though my brain was a mess, what kept my soul whole was the warmth of the hands holding mine on both sides.”

I’m pretty sure it was due to this that he was able to see who Gon truly was. The way Yunjae described Gon was simple yet beautiful and I guess this is also how I would describe Won-Pyung Sohn’s writing style: Beautiful simplicity with many layers. The author never beats about the bush or hides information. It’s all there and you get exactly what you read which was a very refreshing approach and even though the conversations between the characters are pretty unexcited, they still have some sort of beauty to them. I didn’t think I’d enjoy the writing style so much but I did. =)

”I said, shut the fuck up.”
“You are not that kind of person.”
“Fuck,” he shouted, half crying. A nail on the wall must’ve pricked my leg, because it was bleeding. Gon saw and started weeping like a child. Yes, this was who he was. The kind of person who tears up at a drop of blood, who feels pain for other’s pain.

4
As for the ending of the book: I liked it but it almost felt too smooth? I don’t know if I’d have done anything differently but I’ve to admit that I still don’t know how I feel about it. I thought a lot about my final reaction to Yunjae’s story but all I can come up with is that the ending felt too convenient. Still, I really enjoyed “Almond” and I can recommend reading it if you want to go for something different and thought-provoking. I still think about the book and in my book this is always a good thing. 😉

The LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag (Original!)

The LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag4

Hey there, my lovelies!

I always wanted to do my own tag and in 2020 during PRIDE month I thought: Why not make my own LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag!? (Yes, it kind of rhymes again. You know, faeries and all that jazz! ;-P ) Anyway back to the topic at hand: Why did I do my own LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag? Well, 1.) I tried to find an already existing tag I could do for Pride month but nothing I found was the way I imagined it in my head. 2.) Once the idea took root the muse of creativity hit me full force and I couldn’t have stopped for the life of me. 3.) I blame it all on May and Sabrina!!! *lol* No, seriously, those two girls were so creative when they invented their The Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus Character Book Tag and The School for Good and Evil Book Tag that I was inspired big time! ❤ 4.) I’m a part of the community so I figured… why the hell not? 😛

Additional and nonrelevant (at least for you) info:

  • I know my graphics aren’t nearly as good as May’s or Sabrina’s and probably way too colourful, but I did my best or at least tried to. Bear with me? *lol* T_T
  • I never made my own tag, so this is a premiere and hopefully a good one. XD
  • You don’t even want to know how long it took me to create this and I really hope you enjoy the prompts and puns/wordplays. There went a lot of thought into them.

Okay, I’m done now! So without further ado: Let’s just go for it!
