Review: The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky (Mackenzi Lee)

Rating: 4 Pfoten

”Someday, you little twat, I’d tell him, it’s going to be more. It’s going to be better, and so will you. Where we start doesn’t have to be where we end up.”

This might have been a very short novella but it was so good and kinda heart-breaking but also very hopeful?! I really loved to be back in the Montague sibling’s world and it was so good to see more of Percy and Monty. This story played right after the events of the first book and we got a brief glimpse at their lives on the island. They are still waiting for the ships departure and Felicity as well as Scipio’s crew are a part of this short story as well. As for what it is about:

”It’s only been a month.”
“Only?” She arches an eyebrow. My regret that I even toed this subject with her intensifies. “I expected that once you and Percy were in agreement about living in sin, you would lean hard into it.”

Haha! Yeah it’s basically about Monty and Percy finally going for the huge task of spending a night together. Seriously, Felicity’s and Monty’s conversations always give me life and those two siblings are just hilarious. It’s kinda sweet to see that despite them being super awkward around each other when it comes to the topic of love, they still find a way to talk about it anyway. Neither Felicity nor Monty are keen on exploring that topic with anyone, but their sibling bond is strong enough to be able to talk about it together. And this was extremely heart-warming and wholesome to see. =)

”I was almost always with someone because I was bored and hated myself, and it was something to do that wasn’t thinking about either of those things. I’ve never been with anyone because I loved them and wanted something more together. So this has never required any sort of emotional component, and I don’t know how to do that. I don’t even know if I can. Maybe I’m too far gone.”

But oh, Monty’s trauma runs so deep it was really sad to hear him speak about his feelings and initial motivations for sexual encounters. T_T I could understand why he felt nervous about spending a night with Percy and it made me very sad to hear him talk about himself. For someone who always came across as extremely confident there are a lot of hidden wounds our poor boy has to heal. I still haven’t read the last book but I’m kinda afraid I will come to dislike their father even more. And I already hate him with the fierce fires of hell for everything he did to Monty! *GRRR*

”You don’t owe me sex. You don’t owe me anything. I’m with you because I want to be. And if we’re together, it’ll be because we both want to be. And we are going to London together because we want to. And it’s going to be a disaster. But that’s all right, because we’ll have each other, and there’s no one on this goddamn planet I’d rather be a disaster with than you.”

I’m just glad Percy and Monty are so close they can talk about everything because boy, for a minute there I was really worried about how things would develop. *lol* It’s so rare to find a relationship like the one of those two and it was so, so, so good to finally have two YA characters that actually TALK about their problems and don’t fall for the typical miscommunication trope. Honestly, it was very refreshing to see how they solved their troubles. And the way Monty feels about Percy!? It was so beautiful I almost cried! I really wish we would have gotten Percy’s POV too but I suppose you can’t have everything. XD

”I want to breathe him, let him fill up my chest until my ribs strain and I break open like ripe fruit beneath a paring knife. I would be raw. I would freckle and blister in the sun. I would teach my body to regrow my heart each time I gave it to him, over and over and over again. Heart after heart after heart – every one of them his.”

We did get a little bit more about Scipio though and I swear this man is my hero! Why can’t the world have more Scipios? I absolutely adore this man and the way he talks to Monty! I wish Monty would have had him as a father instead of the vile and cruel creature that actually fathered him. But then again I guess that Scipio is more of a father to Monty and Felicity than their real father ever was. He is accepting and kind and he has his heart at the right place. Get yourself a Scipio and his crew to support you! ❤

I laugh – one short, humorless burst. “What would I have said – could you vacate the apartments for a while so Percy and I can engage in illegal activities?”
“Not illegal.”
“They are where I come from.” I shake my head, staring down at my feet. “I couldn’t have. I’ve been struck too many times.”
“Then maybe I should have said it to you sooner – you needn’t hide around us,” he says. “I’m sorry you ever felt you had to. And that the world makes you feel as though you have to.” I finally mange to look up at him, and he smiles. I almost start to cry.

This said I really enjoyed this short story and I loved to be back in their world! It was so good to see more of Monty and Percy and to find out how they eventually ended up in London in book two. “The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky” was the little puzzle piece I needed in order to fill in the blanks and to go happily into book 3! If it’s not already on my TBR I’ll place it there for 2023! 😉
All told, I can recommend reading this novella because it ultimately will end up giving you all the warm and wholesome vibes you wanted to get after finishing book one.

The LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag (Original!)

The LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag4

Hey there, my lovelies!

I always wanted to do my own tag and in 2020 during PRIDE month I thought: Why not make my own LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag!? (Yes, it kind of rhymes again. You know, faeries and all that jazz! ;-P ) Anyway back to the topic at hand: Why did I do my own LGBTQ+ Rep Book Tag? Well, 1.) I tried to find an already existing tag I could do for Pride month but nothing I found was the way I imagined it in my head. 2.) Once the idea took root the muse of creativity hit me full force and I couldn’t have stopped for the life of me. 3.) I blame it all on May and Sabrina!!! *lol* No, seriously, those two girls were so creative when they invented their The Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus Character Book Tag and The School for Good and Evil Book Tag that I was inspired big time! ❤ 4.) I’m a part of the community so I figured… why the hell not? 😛

Additional and nonrelevant (at least for you) info:

  • I know my graphics aren’t nearly as good as May’s or Sabrina’s and probably way too colourful, but I did my best or at least tried to. Bear with me? *lol* T_T
  • I never made my own tag, so this is a premiere and hopefully a good one. XD
  • You don’t even want to know how long it took me to create this and I really hope you enjoy the prompts and puns/wordplays. There went a lot of thought into them.

Okay, I’m done now! So without further ado: Let’s just go for it!

„Heartstopper“ TV series: I legit smiled through my tears! T_T

Hey there, my lovelies!

For a long time I didn’t know what to write as my Saturday post but after finishing the Netflix adaptation of “Heartstopper” yesterday I decided that I needed to talk about this show because damn it!!! It’s so, so, SO good! How could I not rave about this show? XD

Just to give you a warning if you haven’t watched the series in full yet: There will be some spoilers ahead so please keep that in mind before you continued to read. I don’t want to hold back and honestly, I can’t hold myself back. I just need to rave and let it out! *lol*

So this said let’s jump right into it and talk about this awesome show!

  • The first thing I have to point out here is the actors! They all did such a great job and I love that they are all truly diverse!! If you follow the show on IG you might have seen some interviews with the actors and I just love that they are part of the LGBTQAI+ community as well. I mean Joe Locke who plays Charlie is actually gay, Yasmin Finney who plays Elle is a trans girl and the person that plays Darcy goes by they/them pronouns! I can’t say how happy it makes me that there is actual and real representation in this show! They know what they are acting and talking about because they made the experiences themselves! This is amazing and I love it so much!! Alone because of this the series feels so authentic and real!

Netflix confirma el reparto completo de 'Heartstopper'

  • They really held to the comic and there were scenes when you could have taken the comic in hand and would have seen the same scene on screen! ❤ I don’t even have to tell you how amazing this is because everyone who loves book series and saw the movie adaptations knows how often they get it wrong. Not here! Nope!! The “Heartstopper” crew did a marvellous job and I loved how many scenes they took from the comics. Also the leaves!!! AHHH! And the little comic moments like for instance the literal “lightning” that sparked over their hands when Nick wanted to take Charlie’s hand into his! ADKFASKFDASJDFK!
  • It was nice to get additional members of the cast and to see the girl’s school and troubles as well. In the comic their story was told through memories but in the Netflix show we see a lot of it happening in the same time line and that was just great! I loved that Elle and Tao’s story got a chance to shine as well and the fact that Darcy and Tara were such a huge part in the show made me really happy! =) Not to mention Tao’s amazing comebacks! That boy!! He’s at least as quick-witted as I am and whenever he talked back to Harry I was grinning to myself. *lol*

Netflix's "Heartstopper" Cast: Meet the Characters and ...

  • The Tori and Isaac appreciation moment! I can’t even put into words how much I loved Tori and her short appearances! This girl always comes out of thin air and is the best sister ever! ❤ When she comforted Charlie I basically cried with them. T_T Also Tori has such great one-liners I can’t even. Haha! She’s amazing! Isaac is a character that wasn’t introduced to us in the comics and got included in the show but I really loved him and his calm nature. Plus the way he picks up on romantic feelings! It’s like he has some sort of radar for it! XD I really hope we’ll get more of Isaac in the next season and I can’t wait to see where his character will go. (My bestie and I talked about him and we both got an aro/ace vibe from him so yeah, I don’t know if that is true but it would be amazing to have an aro/ace rep in this show as well!)
  • Kit Connor’s acting! This boy is awesome! I absolutely loved how he conveyed Nick’s feelings! From the confusion he felt about falling for Charlie, right to feeling torn about his friends and the way they behaved towards the person he loved. His insecurity whenever he was confronted with his sexuality and his fear of coming out. ARADFKLASDFJASKDF! Also that scene when he tried to figure out his sexuality and did some research on the internet! I loved that they took this 1:1 from the comic and it’s such an important representation because ahh it really happens! I can relate and probably everyone else can too! XD

  • The “lifeline hugs”!! And yes I’m giving them their own spot because they are so damn amazing!! Find yourself someone that hugs you like Nick Nelson hugs Charlie Spring!!! ❤ Like his life would depend on it, like he’s the only thing that matters, like he’s the only one that understands and sees him, like he’s the most precious and important thing in the world!! ADKFASDFJASDFLASDFJADFJKLFDJASDKFLASD! *dies*

Netflix on Twitter: "Find somebody who hugs you like Nick ...

  • Ben and Harry! They were as horrible and despicable as in the comic and the two actors who played them did a really amazing job! Especially if you looked behind the scenes and saw that they are nothing like Ben and Harry in real life. *lol* That’s great acting right there!
  • And last but not least: My favourite scenes! Their first kiss in the empty ballroom had me laughing and crying at the same time! Not to mention the scene when Nick comes to Charlie the next day all wet in the rain! ARGH!!! They were so damn adorable and the chemistry of the two actors blew the screen! I absolutely loved and adored their acting. You could really feel their cuteness and I think the sentence I wrote the most to my bestie while watching was “Why are they so damn adorable?!” *lol* I think my two favourite scenes are the one when Nick wanted to hold Charlie’s hand – and you literally could see the sparks flying – and the scene of Nick coming out to his mum! I’m still crying about that one, I did when I read the comic and I did while watching the show. I really wish every parent of a member of the LGBTQAI+ community would react the same way Nick’s mum did. The way she made sure that he knew he was still her son and that she’d always love him no matter what… T_T I’m in tears again! ❤ This moment was so precious and my heart is bleeding for every member of the LGBTQAI+ community that didn’t get it. If you read this and your coming out wasn’t as smooth as Nick’s: You are loved and special and you are amazing! Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise! ❤

I probably could go on and on raving about this series but I think I’ll just end it here before it truly gets out of hand! (If it didn’t already. *lol*) As you can see I really loved the show and I’m so tempted to rewatch it again and to watch out for the things I missed the first time around. XD I’m sure I missed so many things because I was just too excited to finally see it on screen.

Anyway! What about you?! Did you read the comics and watch the show?! Did you enjoy it as much as I did and if yes what were your favourite moments? What do you think about the acting and the diverse representation? Do you think the series is as good as the comics or even better?!

Talk to me and let me know!

And as always take care and stay healthy and safe! ❤
