Book 31 on My Book List 2021

”Why bother to make music when the silence and wind are so much larger? Why light lamps when the darkness will inevitably snuff them?”

This book was a dark, dark book, but then again it were extremely dark times and all our two main characters Marie-Laure and Werner were trying to do, was to survive them. To be honest I really don’t know how I feel about “All the Light We Cannot See”. It was a good and thought-provoking book and the story was written beautifully. Still, after all the reviews I read I thought this story would hit me harder and that it would be one of those books that would leave me crying in the end. None of that happened though and even though the plot was well-crafted and the prose was lyrical I still couldn’t help but feel a little detached from the characters and their fate.

I think I’m just not used to historical fiction anymore. The writing style in books like this one is very different to what I usually read and even though you follow the characters, you’re not exactly in their heads which is probably one of the main reasons  why I didn’t connect all too much with them. Also I was in a huge reading slump when I started to read the book in April and only picked it up in August again. I did finish it in a couple of days then though so yeah. It definitely had me engaged and I wanted to know what was going to happen next, I just wasn’t as attached to the characters as I usually am when I read other books.

”I want to be an engineer. And you want to study birds. Be like that American painter in the swamps. Why else do any of this if not to become who we want to be?”
A stillness in the room. Out there in the trees beyond Frederick’s window hangs an alien light.
“Your problem, Werner,” says Frederick, “is that you still believe you own your life.”

I however will admit that some scenes in this book hurt. Badly. No matter if it was Marie-Laure who struggled to survive in a world that was ever-changing and had no room for people with disabilities or Werner who just wanted to become an engineer and was forced to go to war instead. Their stories were so different, yet they both were connected somehow. Werner’s childhood and his very brutal education in one of the German military schools, Marie-Laure’s life as a blind person in times that made it even harder to navigate through them because nothing ever stayed the same. Two different sides of a coin but both connected in ways you could only grasp if you closed your eyes and let yourself sink into the story. The older they got the harder their lives became and the stronger the war around them raged. To see the world through Werner’s eyes and Marie-Laure’s ears was at least as fascinating and unique as it was heart-breaking.

”Frederick said we don’t have choices, don’t own our lives, but in the end it was Werner who pretended there were no choices, Werner who watched Frederick dump the pail of water at his feet – I will not – Werner who stood by as the consequences came raining down. Werner who watched Volkheimer wade into house after house, the same ravening nightmare recurring over and over and over.”

But it wasn’t just about Marie-Laure and Werner. There were so many other side-characters that stuck with me but I think Frederick and Volkheimer were the two people I still think about the most. It’s kinda funny how sometimes the side-characters actually leave a deeper impact on the reader than the main characters themselves.

I mean Frederick… oh Frederick. His story moved me the most and I still feel anger boiling deep in my stomach whenever I think about it. In Germany of World War II there was no room for honourable people like Frederick and it still hurts to think about this precious boy. I suppose there was no room for boys like Volkheimer or Werner as well. Volkheimer who was the best soldier because he was burly and did exactly what he was told, but still was so gentle with Werner whenever he was ill. Their friendship was everything and I couldn’t help but like Volkheimer even though he did what he did. Talk about conflicting feelings. >_<

Volkheimer definitely saw the potential in Werner and appreciated his talent and gifts. Truth be told, I think Werner was a genius that never got a chance to shine because all his talent went into the war machine and for me this makes him an even more tragic character than he would have been already.

”Go,”  says Volkheimer again. Werner looks at him a last time: his torn jacket and shovel jaw. The tenderness of his big hands. What you could be.
Did he know? All along?

I think this quote emphasizes it pretty well. Anyway, there’s one thing I still need to address before I wrap up my review and this is the supposed love story in this book. When you read the blurb you automatically think that there will be a love story between Marie-Laure and Werner but this is not the case. There is no love story between them and they only meet once in the entire book. So if you’re going into this book because you expect a romance you better be aware of this. I totally expected there to be a love story between them and was pretty disappointed when I discovered that there was none. Maybe I would have enjoyed the book even more if I would have known that from the get-go.

”Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.”

This said “All the Light We Cannot See” was a very good and thought-provoking book. It’s a slow story that takes time to unfold and to grow which is in total contrast to the fast-paced world and the time it plays in, but I think this was actually a big part of its charm. If you’re looking for a good historical fiction book that plays in World War II and packs a subtle yet strong punch you definitely should pick it up.

August Wrap-Up

Wrap Up

So today is September 14th and it’s only now that I finally manage to get up my monthly wrap-up post for August. *lol* What can I say? Life’s been busy! XD My summer this year was wild. Haha! So many weddings and birthday parties I’m honestly kinda glad that the next bigger part will be in November and that I’ll be able to spend a couple of weekends at home again. Not gonna complain, though! I mean after two years of Covid it was really nice to see so many relatives and friends for the first time after such a long time. 😀

Also fun fact: Every time when I did a vlive on my BookTube channel for my #Klunealong there was a wedding on the day before so I was always totally tired from the night before. *lol* The vlives and the Klunealong itself were a lot of fun though, and I really wouldn’t have wanted to miss this! Not gonna lie, it was quite a lot of work as well and another reason why my August was so busy. To organize a readalong isn’t half as easy as it looks or sounds like. ;-P

Aside from that I had to organize a lot of things in August too. For one I had to take a closer look at what I’m going to study next after my first exam is finished at the beginning of October and secondly my kid started with school as well, which caused me to run around trying to get everything the teacher needed for a good school start. The bottom line: School is expensive and to get all the things you need is exhausting and stressful. After going to 4 different stores and still not getting what I wanted I actually even resorted to order some things from the internet. *lol*

And before I go into even more detail about school stuff let’s just jump into another topic. Namely my monthly wrap-up! XD

Books read: 4 (4 books & 0 webcomic, I think that’s not all too bad considering all those books were pretty long and had 300+ pages)

Pages read: 1.661 (Kinda happy with the amount of pages this time around. )

Average rating: 4,25 (Thankfully August was a way better reading month than July and I enjoyed all of the books I read. 😀 )

Books that were on my reading list: 3 ( 0 from 2020, 2 from 2021 and 1 from 2022. Wow, 3 of the four books I read were actually from my TBR lists?! Who am I?! XD )

One Last Stop: 4 Pfoten,5

Okay, this book was really, really good and I enjoyed it a lot! I loved the found family trope so much and I absolutely adored all of the characters! In short I had a great time reading „One Last Stop“! The writing style in this one was definitely less jarring than in RWARB and it was easy to page through it and to take part in guessing what happened to Jane. The only reason this gets 4,5 paws instead of 5 is that it didn’t blow me away as much as RWARB did. *lol* Also if you have problems with too much PDA you should be careful with picking up this book! A full review will follow soon! 😉

The Kingdom of Back: 3 Pfoten,5

Marie Lu’s take on Mozart was super interesting. When I found this book in the library I just couldn’t resist to borrow it. I mean I never heard of this before and then it’s some sort of Mozart retelling? Colour me intrigued! As someone from Austria – the country of Mozart – the temptation was just too much. XD This read like a fairy tale and some sort of bad nightmare and I was here for it. It’s definitely more in the direction of middle grade though and sometimes it was a little bit confusing. If you like things like that you should be fine though. My full review will hopefully be up rather sooner than later.

The Extraordinaries: 5 Pfoten

This was my second TJ Klune book and I read it during my #Klunealong! And let me tell you this: This book was hilarious!!! I loved „The Extraordinaries“ so much and it definitely managed to have that fine balance when a story hits you in the feels while also causing you to laugh out loud.  I swear Klune is becoming one of my fave authors pretty fast and I can’t wait to dive into more of his books. ❤

All the Light We Cannot See: 4 Pfoten

This book has been on my TBR for ages and I finally managed to pick it up and to finish it after doing so. I think I started with this in April but then other books had a higher priority and I kinda left it on my „currently reading“. Also it’s a sad book and I had to be in the right mood for it. This said, I eventually picked it up again and … well liked it. I dunno if that’s the right word. It’s a very sad and depressing topic so „enjoy“ and „like“ don’t feel like the proper words. It was a good story and it had me engaged. Maybe we can put it like that. XD It took me a while to get used to the writing style though because I’m just so used to YA books that historical fiction was quite a challenge after such a long time. *lol*

This said: How was your August? Did you read many books? Which book was your favourite and which book was a disappointment? Did you already read the books I mentioned and if „yes“ did you enjoy them? Were you busy during summer too? Are you at school and if yes, did the new semester start good for you?

Talk to me and let me know! 😉

And as always take care and stay healthy and safe!

SASSY Saturday

SASSY Saturday

Hey there my lovelies!

Welcome back to another round of my montly blog meme „SASSY Saturday“!

How does it work? Well, that’s easy! 😉

All you have to do is to follow those three golden rules:

1. Credit the creator of this tag (The Sassy Library Fox) and link back. (so I can see all your amazing answers!)
2. Answer the 5 questions below!
3. AND enjoy doing the blog meme! 😛

„SASSY Saturday“ is planned to be a monthly meme but if you want to do it more often feel free to go for it! This meme was created to get to know other bloggers, their new obsessions and to reflect on your own last month! Above all it was created to have fun though! 😉 If you want you can also use the banner I created! This said let’s head to the good part:

S – Series you loved this month

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo: My Yoongi and I finally managed to finish the series! *lol* I kinda got distracted by another series in the middle and it took me a while to pick up that one again. XD Once I did I was totally ready to find out how it would end though. =) I swear Jun-hyung is the perfect bf and I really loved him so much! Bok-joo was so lucky to have him and their love story was very adorable. XD If you don’t mind teen antics you should definitely go for that one. 😉

Lucifer – Season 4: I finally borrowed season 4 from my library and I went through it so fast you have no idea! It wasn’t the best „Lucifer“ season but it was entertaining enough and after THAT ending I really want to know what happens in season 5 and 6. Hopefully my library will get them soon.

A – Author you discovered

22041082. sy475

Anthony Doerr – All the Light We Cannot See

I’ve never read a book by Anthony Doerr but I really liked this one. I didn’t cry though. Apparently I’ve grown a cold-cold heart! *lol* Joking aside I think it’s just the kind of writing style that caused me to feel a little bit disconnected to the characters. If that makes sense? It was more like I was watching a movie and following the characters instead of being right smack into the action. XD Still, it was a great book with a message and I can recommend it. =)

S – Song you couldn’t get enough of

Benny Blanco, BTS & Snoop Dog – Bad Decisions

This song is so nice and another catchy tune! I swear when BTS goes for pop they do it thoroughly! XD I could listen to this all day long and I’m so proud of our vocal line boys for working with Snoop Dog! ❤ I can’t wait for the next song to drop. I swear ever since they are on a break we get way more of them than we thought we would. *lol* It’s basically BTS content x 7!

S – Surprise – Something that totally caught you off guard

That I actually hit 300 subscribers on my YouTube channel! It’s been an up and down for months now and the number was always between 292 and 296. Mas or menos. But one day I suddenly hit the 300 mark and I was like: WOAH! It actually happened! O_o This wasn’t everything that surprised me though: I also hit 500 followers on my blog on here!! Which is the reason why I’ll go for a huge giveaway on all my social media! So stay tuned! 😉 This said I also want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who’s reading this right now! Thank you so much for all the support and love! ❤

Y – Your fave blog post of another blogger

„Why Were These Books Banned? Should They Stay Banned?“ @ Hundreds & Thousands of Books

I suck when it comes to this because I’m a horrible, horrible follower. (You’ll get nothing but the truth from me. *lol*) But I recently read a very interesting T10T blog post by Hundreds & Thousands of Books and this one is definitely worth to be featured! I loved to read about the reasons why books get banned sometimes and it wasn’t just informative but also made for a great discussion topic. XD I loved that this was so though-provoking and I want to dig deeper into the topic now as well. So thank you for that! ❤ If you don’t know Hundreds & Thousands of Books blog yet, please take a look! It’s so worth it! =)
